Where to Hike in Montrose, Colorado

There are so many options for hiking around Montrose. Whether you want mountain views, a hike full of different flora and fauna or canyons, you can find a place near us, so pack up your high-energy snacks and check out these hiking areas!
Black Canyon National Park
This is a great place to go for people of all skill levels. There are mild and rugged hiking options that all bring beautiful sites. Try out the hikes along the Canyon Rim or the Inner Canyon Hikes (these are a bit more challenging) for varying distances and a lot of wildlife. If you want a more extreme adventure, get a permit and take the beautiful Red Rock Canyon Route.
Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area
This area features four hiking trails that descend into the Gold Medal fishing waters of the Gunnison River. If you enjoy getting in the water, head over to Chukar Trail which provides access. In total, this trail is 2.2 miles and is moderately difficult. Keep your eyes open for Mountain sheep and other wildlife.
Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest
If you are in to backpacking, this is a great place to go! The San Juan Mountains feature cliffs, streams, aspens and stunning flowers. You can also find yourself on a trail that leads to an abandoned mine or a stunning waterfall. If you are up for a challenge, hike one of the San Juan "fourteeners" and enjoy the breathtaking views at the top!
